One Big, Colorful Granny Square Blanket

I have mentioned a few times how I wanted to make a big, colorful granny square blanket using yarn from my massive cotton stash. I love making granny squares, but after finally finishing my Garden Patch Granny Afghan, I knew that I did not have it in me to crochet many squares and then sew them together; the thought of sewing squares together actually made me shudder. So I decided to just make one huge granny square, around and around, changing from one color to another, a simple and rhythmic project that fit nicely with summer crocheting on the patio.

To begin, I laid out all my cotton yarn and played around a bit deciding on the color order. I was a little apprehensive at first to include the red, but in the end I love it being in the colorful mix.
I kept crocheting until I ran out of yarn to complete another repeat of the pattern. I added a white border to frame the blanket.

When I began, I really had no idea where I would put this blanket, but when it was finished I realized that it would be a perfect addition to Bridget's room. It is now laid across the chair in her bedroom where she sits and reads.
My goal was to make a colorful blanket, and I do say I have succeeded.

I am very happy with my one big, colorful granny square blanket and that making it made a huge dent in my cotton stash.

I am kind of done making blankets for a while, and am working through some of my remaining cotton by doing some fun, smaller projects which I will show you soon. It feels odd not to have a huge project 'on-the-go' but is also quite satisfying to be finishing up smaller projects quite often, especially during these busy days of summer when there always seems to be somewhere to go and something else to do.

  1. I love it!! So colorful and gorgeous! You make me want to try crocheting again. I knit all the time, but I haven't crocheted in quite a few years. I'm inspired!
