Hanger Time

Do you remember these?

Did your mom or grandmother have these hanging in their closet years ago?  I know mine sure did.

My mom taught my sister and I to make these as kids and I have many wonderful memories of the time spent together working on them.  This is just one of the things I love most about crafts - the way that sharing your craft can bring people together and build memories.

Recently, I got the hankering to make a few covered hangers again.  It is amazing that after years of not doing it, I can pick it up and, without even thinking about it, my fingers know where to go.

To cover the hangers, I used Qualicraft Nylotex.

I am not even sure if Qualicraft Nylotex is still available?  I have a huge stash from years ago; the last time I bought some was at Woolco (the predecessor to Walmart in Canada).

I picked up wire hangers at the dry cleaners (they are always willing to give me a handful) and used a measuring piece I have saved for years, to measure out my covering material.

And after a few hours I had five covered hangers to add to my closet.

I love making these hangers every once in a while.  They are simple and relaxing to work up, and are so pretty when completed.

Were these hangers around your home?

Do you know if Qualicraft Nylotex is still available?

Do you remember shopping at Woolco?

  1. I always wanted to know how to make them and finally found out how today! My grandmother made them, but unfortunately she passed away many years ago, before I had an interest in the hangers (or, truth be told, before I really knew she was the one who made them). I've just been researching what the material is (the lady who showed me called it "salvage") and thanks to the help of another friend was able to figure out it is nylotex. As far as I can tell it isn't made anymore.

    1. I hope you can find some Nylotex somewhere and make some hangers. One place I think you might have luck is at yard sales or thrift shops. You never know when someone will clean out their Grandma's house and find some. Good luck and thanks for reading!

  2. Hello, Does anyone know how to knit (size of needles, patters) with nylotex? The package of nylotex shows a picture of the hangers, lawn chair, slippers, and placemat. I dropped off some clothing at a drop off bin and came home with a bunch of hangers sitting near the bin. Once all of the hangers are used up,I want to try knitting with nylotex.
I really appreciate any suggestions anyone can post.

    1. I don't know how to knit with Nylotex (or otherwise for that matter) but I do think that a mat would be wonderful knit out of this material. I have seen patterns for mats in various places online and they have all called for very chunky yarn; I am sure that the pattern would translate well if you used Nylotex. You would probably have to use very large knitting needles, however the Nylotex that I have is not all the same thickness so if this is the case with what you have, you may need to adjust your needle size. Good luck with whatever you decide to make. Thanks for reading!

    4. Hi everyone!

The demand for Nylotex yarn was higher than expected and everything I had has been sold. I'll post a new comment if I find more.
      Thanks!

    6. Hello,
My last post was in June 2012.
I recetnly purchased form Gaétan Beaudoin (beaudoin@9bit.qc.ca). The royal blue seemed more "lacy" in texture however, very lovely and bright and good for wrapping hangers. Corriel (orange), green and navy definitely had more of the familiar shiny soft fabric feel of nylotex. All packaging was the old familiar nylotex packaging. I am very pleased with the customer service I received.
      Happy crafting,

  4. Buyer beware! I recently ordered some "Nylotex" from Carl Beaudoin (see his post above dated June). But what I received was not Nylotex at all, but rather what appears to be a home-made version. The fabric composition, weight and texture of the different colours was inconsistent. Hope this will prevent others from making the same mistake.

    1. I have bought from this guy last month and I'm satisfied. He also sells Nylotex on Etsy and Ebay... and all his feedbacks are positive. I suggest you to buy in store or ask for samples before buying to avoid disappointment! Nylotex can be a thin or a solid nylon cord as showed on covered hangers on this web page...

    1. Faye, I do not sell Nylotex. I have been working with material I bought years ago. It is available online, but I have never bought any there myself. I hope you can find what you are looking for. Thanks for reading.

  8. I've had the pattern for braided hangers on my site for a few years and it brings in many many visitors. Just yesterday someone told me the pattern was by Qualicraft and a Google search bought me to your site. Glad to have found you. I've left a clickable link in my name to the pattern I have.

  9. Isn't Nylotex the same thing as Phentex Craft & Slipper yarn? I bought Phentex at Zellers (Canada) years ago to make rugs, slippers, and hanger covers; every once in a while I pull out my stash and make a couple of things for fun. Phentex is the only kind of yarn like that I've seen in Canada, I never heard of Nylotex until today. They now sell Phentex Craft & Slipper yarn at Walmart and there's a much better selection of colours these days.

    1. It might be similar, but the Nylotex works much better for cover hangers - it is more of a fabric then yarn. Does anyone have any for sale - I can't seem to find any besides ebay...

  12. I used to make craft hangers back in 1996. A friend from swimming class taught me a pattern but I haven't made any in over 20 years but I want to get back into it. If anyone is selling Nylotex, please let me know. The colour I would like the most is dark pink. Other colours I would also like are burgundy. royal blue and dark purple (if it exists) but any colour will do too. Please e-mail me at melmuff@gmail.com. Thank you.
